MT-1 (Melanotan I) is a research-grade synthetic linear analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), formulated for controlled laboratory investigation of melanocortin receptor biology and pigmentation signaling. Unlike its cyclic counterpart Melanotan II, MT-1 exhibits high selectivity for the MC1R subtype, making it a precise tool for isolating and studying MC1R-mediated signaling pathways without off-target receptor activation.

MC1R is predominantly expressed in melanocytes, where its activation drives the cAMP-dependent upregulation of tyrosinase activity and the preferential synthesis of eumelanin over pheomelanin. Research applications for MT-1 include mechanistic studies of UV-independent pigmentation, melanocyte proliferation and differentiation, and the role of MC1R in photoprotective signaling.
